Program overview
Since the Homeless Outreach Program was launched in 2006 more than 6,000 people living on the street in 49 communities across the province have found housing as a result of the Homeless Outreach Program. Since the October 12, 2007 announcement, the expansion of the homeless outreach program to break the cycle of homelessness, has included:

  • Expanding homeless outreach services to 49 new and existing communities;
  • Providing $1.2 million in rent supplements to assist the homeless in the private market.
Reaching out to homeless individuals across B.C.
Individuals sleeping on the streets are especially vulnerable. Through the Homeless Outreach Program, BC Housing works in consultation with community-based agencies to reach out to individuals who find themselves homeless. This program is client-centred as it connects homeless people to housing, income assistance, and community-based social and health services in over 49 communities across British Columbia.

BC Housing staff work in conjunction with community providers to engage individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and link them to the appropriate services and housing. Outreach workers undertake a wide range of support activities:

  • Address immediate physical and safety needs, such as food, warm clothing and a place to stay;
  • Connect people with housing and income support, including making and accompanying them to appointments;
  • Provide links to other support services, such as life skills training, personal health, household and financial management;
  • Act as a landlord liaison.
